The intel­li­gent Child Teak Edu­ca­tion Trust (iCTET) is the first project of its kind where tim­ber from a tree can be used to finance a spon­sored child’s higher edu­ca­tion or appren­tice­ship. Grad­u­ates are often hit with the real­ity that a fur­ther edu­ca­tion can be very expen­sive. Par­ents are often over­whelmed by the finan­cial bur­den of pro­vid­ing, let’s say, a uni­ver­sity edu­ca­tion for their chil­dren. Young adults often depend on some form of finan­cial sup­port to fur­ther their edu­ca­tion and train­ing.  Sadly, if no edu­ca­tion fund has been put aside for them, many have to give up their ambi­tions altogether.

For­est of Peace’s project, the intel­li­gent Child Teak Edu­ca­tion Trust, makes sure that a child born today will be able to pur­sue a voca­tional or higher edu­ca­tion tomor­row – all costs paid, or in part depend­ing on edu­ca­tion or car­rier pur­sued,  and not depen­dent on the exchange rate or stock market.

The one-time con­tri­bu­tion entrusted to the iCTET project today des­ig­nates a young tree grow­ing on one of For­est of Peace’s plan­ta­tions to the project. 15–18 years later, when this tree has matured, its tim­ber value will go towards the edu­ca­tion of a young adult.

Who should par­take in the iCTET project and who will benefit?

Any­body may entrust money in a tree grow­ing on land owned by For­est of Peace. Par­ents for their chil­dren; young cou­ples plan­ning a fam­ily; grand­par­ents want­ing to give long-lasting and val­ued baby shower gifts; aunts and uncles who under­stand the impor­tance of a good edu­ca­tion; even friends or col­leagues of parents-to-be; but also employ­ers can par­take who want to sur­prise expect­ing employ­ees on the day of birth of the child.

In addi­tion, we accept gen­eral dona­tions entrusted to the iCTET project with­out a pre-selected ben­e­fi­ciary, i.e. the donor makes a con­tri­bu­tion towards the edu­ca­tion of an unknown child. In these cases, iCTET’s trustees select a wor­thy beneficiary.

How is this possible?

First For­est of Peace will plant a young tree on land owned by them. The tree is then cared for and main­tained in its growth period of 15–18 years. After 15–18 years, the tree will be felled and the pro­ceeds from sale of the tim­ber will go in its full amount to the des­ig­nated young adult’s edu­ca­tion, higher edu­ca­tion or apprenticeship.

Exam­ple

Under nor­mal cir­cum­stances a teak tree’s trunk will grow to about 18 meters in 15 years with a trunk diam­e­ter of approx­i­mately 33cm. This results in about 6.3 cubic meter of valu­able tim­ber; yield­ing approx­i­mately 2,205.00 € in today’s value (tim­ber is sold per cubic meter).

Above price cal­cu­la­tion is based on data from Inter­na­tional Trop­i­cal Tim­ber Orga­ni­za­tion or ITTO refer­ring to logs taken from plan­ta­tions, and John Gilliland of Tec­tona G. Cap­i­tal who, as a trop­i­cal high-grade hard­wood invest­ment man­age­ment com­pany, sets the present value for 1 cubic meter of teak tim­ber at 350.00 €.

Please note that the roots remain the prop­erty of the land owner, in this case For­est of Peace, and the crown will be made avail­able for Bud­dhist char­i­ta­ble donations.

 

How can my child make a claim from iCTET
after 15–18 years?

With your pay­ment via Pay­Pal you will receive a pay­ment receipt with a unique pay gate num­ber. For­est of Peace will send you a wall cer­tifi­cate con­tain­ing this num­ber plus the loca­tion and coor­di­na­tion of your ded­i­cated tree. Any query or claim may be addressed to For­est of Peace at  the address men­tioned in the Con­tact Us page or semd an email to iCTET@forest-of-peace.org, or directly to the iCTET trustee iCTET.trustee@forest-of-peace.org (please use the pay gate num­ber as your ref­er­ence). A des­ig­nated cus­to­dian is avail­able to accept claims for edu­ca­tion and train­ing course mate­ri­als and to reim­burse the ben­e­fi­ciary up to the full value of the tim­ber value of the year it was felled and sold. The pay­ment may be a one time pay­ment in full or exe­cuted in instalments.
